The Memories That Still Feel Like Home

Today marks three years since we lost Gilbert.

Three years feels like such a long time, yet I still love and miss him so much. So much has changed, but there are still so many little things that bring me right back to him.

I remember Gilbert and Norman chasing each other around the house, sitting together watching the birds, and what a great little hunter he was. I remember our cozy cuddles with Mom, how he would come asking for kisses, and how he would follow me around just because he wanted to be close. I miss watching him and Norman find their favourite hangout spots around the house, sometimes together and sometimes each in their own little corner. They were such ordinary moments then, but they have become some of my most precious memories now.

We’re moving soon, and I keep wishing Gilbert were coming with us. I wish I could watch him and Norman explore the new house together, find their favourite windows and their new favourite hangout spots, and discover all the birds outside. With our family growing too, there are so many moments ahead that I wish he could still be here for.

Over the past three years, I’ve tried to keep Gilbert’s memory alive through volunteering, cat rescue work, and sponsoring a kennel in his memory. I hope that, in some small way, the love we have for Gilbert can continue to do something good and help other cats. It means so much to know that his memory can give another cat a little more love, care, safety, or a chance at a better life.

I know you are in a better place now, Gilly. I hope somehow you know how much Mom still thinks about you, talks about you, and misses you.

No matter where we live or how much time passes, you will always be part of our family. I will always remember the cuddles, the kisses, the little footsteps following me, your adventures with Norman, and all the love you gave us.

I miss you more than words can say, and I wish you were still here.

Gilly baby, I love you. Always. 🤍
